Power/Holiness/Evangelism: Rediscovering God's Purity, Power
I purchased this book as a second thought, and found out I got more than I bargained for. The level of expertise and experience with God impressed me initially, but it was the depth of each topic presented by each of the authors that shocked me. When dealing with God and spiritual subjects in books, there are so many approaches, and many that are really weird, but in this book the contributing authors do much to show by scriptures and experience the reality of the need for the church to be seeking God's power, holiness, and evangelistic outreach to the human race. This is not a book of testimonies alone, but scriptures and the reality of the topics listed in the title. Another book that assisted me in certain sections of this book was I Give You Authority by Charles Kraft. Though much different in subject, it assisted me in understanding some things that are occurring in the South American churches. I highly recommend this book for one's bookself, not only for reading, but as a text book for what is happening in Christianity today.

Unity and Passion for God
The chapters are written by individuals from various backgrounds who are sensing the Holy Spirit drawing them into a closer relationship with God. This purity of heart has been documented in past and present revivals around the world.

Preface to the Study of Paul
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (February, 1997)
Author: Stephen Westerholm
Average review score:

Profound matters in simple prose
Dr. Westerholm's book is excellently written and easily understood. Anyone who has heard about the "New Perspective" on Paul but does not understand what it is all about should buy this book. Even those who have read Sanders, Longenecker or Dunn on the subject will not be dissappointed in the "Preface to the Study of Paul". There is something about Westerholm's ability to take profound concepts and express them simply that makes him an excellent author and teacher. This book is a must buy.

Paul for dummies and (post)modernists and scholars and etc.
Westerholm's introduction to Pauline thought succeeds at providing the reader with both the importance for studying Paul and an overview of Paul's beliefs, which come from his "Jewish-Christian horizon" and his personal encounter with Christ. Paul's letter to the Romans is Westerholm's primary reference for delving into Paul's mind. The author begins the "preface" with Paul's view of his calling to show that Paul must be interpreted in his own horizon. Westerholm continues by explaining Old Testament ideas that Paul assumes and uses in Romans i.e. righteousness, sin, moral law, atonement, faith, and the will. Many illustrations that the modern/postmodern person will identify with are used to show the relevance of these ideas. As the book progresses the author seems to believe that he has proved Paul's relevance because the illustrations disappear and Paul's own use of the Old Testament ideas is greatly emphasized. Westerholm's style is so effective that by the end of the book he has taken the reader from ignorance about Paul to the very heart of difficult issues in Pauline theology such as Paul's view of the law, election, and ethics, which he presents with a neo-Lutheran slant. This introduction to Pauline thought is a remarkable achievement that can benefit anyone from the novice to the scholar.

The Prince and Other Political Writings (Everyman Paperback
Published in Paperback by Everyman Paperback Classics ()
Authors: Niccolo MacHiavelli and Stephen J. Milner
Average review score:

The World's Greatest Pragmatist
As he states in the beginning of this small, almost tiny, work, The Prince is not a very florid or complex piece, nor are its contents very innovative.

The brilliance of this text lies in its mundane and matter-of-fact nature. Machiavelli excels in taking common sense tidbits of practical government and synthesizing them into an easily read and masterful textbook for leaders of all organizations, and a must-read for any aspiring leader or student of history.

There are very few holes in his arguments, and he usually has a contingency for all of them. The biggest ideological flaw of The Prince is that Machiavelli seems torn over the nature of mankind: whether it is inherently good or evil; generous or self-interested. He doesn't (seem to) consider the possibility of a middle ground.

Contrary to his characterization (rather character assassination) by moralists, Machiavelli does not advocate abject cruelty or evil machinations. He sees them as tools to be implemented rarely, infrequently, and only when necessary. These tools, as vile as he admits them to be, are to be used only for the most noble of purposes: the preservation, stability and prosperity of the state and the people.

Furthermore, he seems to have a genuine belief in the mercy, love and power of God. A good deal more than many of the clergymen of his day!

Additionally, he seems to have a great amount of fear/respect for the common people, alluding to his more republican tendencies. In fact, one can almost hear him exalt the masses as the source of all real power (especially when he discusses the Swiss).

He does not moralize the audience, he merely provides them with his own experiences and those of history to lend him credibility and allows them to make decisions. (On a personal note: He'd have made an excellent economist!)

I commend Everyman for including the supplemental readings, as they shine light upon many of Machiavelli's references. I do however think that the translation was a too stiff (more fit for an audience contemporary to Machiavelli!) and suffers from the occasional confusing passage and grammatical error, but it has a good style and good use of devices. There is an abundance of footnotes (although a few less in some place and more in others would have been better). I was shocked that no reference was made about Machiavelli's allusion to The Aeneid at the beginning of Chapter 7.

In any event, this is a supreme work and should sit on everyone's bookshelf. Whether you hate Machiavelli and what he espouses, you will find yourself more appreciative of politics, and of democracy, after having read this testament to realism.

Get Power, be in Control!
From the father of the theory of power, the reknowned statesman Niccolo Machiavelli, this book teaches strategies for getting power and control. If you think that now, 400 yrs. later it will be outdated, think again! Machiavelli's ideas are VERY valid in today's world. Don't skip over the examples he gives just because that is a thing of the past; think how those situations compare to the modern world.

Moralists, beware! you may be exposed to see the side of the world you'd rather suppress.

Read this classic, and also get "What would Machiavelli do?" by Stanley Bing, and "The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene and Joost Elffers.

Principles of Orthopaedic Practice
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (01 December, 1996)
Authors: Roger Dee, Lawrence C. Hurst, Martin A. Gruber, and Stephen A. Kottmeier
Average review score:

Core Knowledge Study Guide
This book represents a core knowledge in orthopaedics. It is a good place to start your reading on most conditions faced in practice.

The chapters are not exhaustive in their analysis of topics, hence a more detailed analysis of a topic would need to be supplemented with literature reading. e.g. Arthroplasty
It is not a technical book! but guides the reader to critical papers that should be read to supplement the book.

Highly recommended for the trainee in their first years of training to get started, or the more seasoned practitioner to quickly brush up!

An excelent book
A very good book which servs as the official Textbook in our orthopeadic department. Quite easy to read and very thorow.

Programming in C++ (2nd Edition)
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (12 April, 1995)
Authors: Stephen C. Dewhurst and Kathy Stark
Average review score:

My favorite C++ book!
I was looking if there is probably a newer edition of this book and couldn't help writing a review about this one. I bought this book back in 1996 while I was visiting a beginner's course in C++ and data structures during my BS studies. The main reason why I bought it was because it is a relatively thin book (about 300 pages) which was very attractive since I wanted to learn the basics only, and quick! This book has almost no diagrams, no colored text and none of the pedagogical structuring which we see so often in other tutorial books. And, believe it or not, this is what makes this book so clear to understand. The chapters are short and well-written. There are lines of C++ code on almost every page. Nothing is explained without some sample code. I've been programming with Java for a long time and I am refreshing my C++ knowledge these days. I don't even think about looking into any other book before I've re-read this one.

By far the best text on the subject
If you enjoyed K&R's C programming text, you'll find the format and style of this book excellent, both as an introduction to the C++ language and a tool for advanced users. I read the book from cover to cover and have not found any other book this fascinating. The authors are excellent writers and tutors. Use it for self-study or as a complete textbook. Ample problems and their solutions are provided. Can't wait for the next edition.

Prophet of Fire: A Novel
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (01 May, 1992)
Author: William H. Stephens
Average review score:

Fantastic novelization!
. . . Many authors have tried to novelize (write novels based on) Biblical stories and/or characters. Only three or four authors have done a good job: Leading the pack are Thom Lemmons and William H. Stephens.
. . . This book is well written, entertaining, and (most importantly for this genre of novelization) accurate to the original story. A fantastic job!
. . . I just want to know when I'll be able to get a copy for a gift... :)

very graphic and informative
The author takes you into the time of Elijah with a very detailed account of his life and the area in which he lived. Elijah's personality was shown to be a very determined man with a mission. I quite enjoyed the book, it was hard to put down.

Proposals That Work : A Guide for Planning Dissertations and Grant Proposals
Published in Paperback by Sage Publications (January, 1987)
Authors: Lawrence F. Locke, Waneen Wyrick Spirduso, and Stephen J. Silverman
Average review score:

The Only Proposal Guide You Need
As any graduate student will tell you acceptance onto a Ph.D program is largely based on submitting a successful proposal. Thereafter, as long as the researcher adheres to the proposal, graduation is virtually guaranteed. I am a Ph.D student who used the book to construct my proposal, which was summarily accepted by the research committee with minor changes. This appears to be contrary to what many Ph.D hopefuls experience. The book is expensive however I would highly recommend it. The proposal hurdle is well worth overcoming professionally.

Focus your ideas into a practical proposal.
As someone who works privately with students and researchers in a variety of fields, I give this book my highest recommendation. The essence of any research project is the proposal. For dissertation students, the proposal is the blueprint for the entire dissertation process. For researchers in all fields, the research proposal is the most important vehicle for securing funding. When clients contact me in regard to assistance with their proposal, I recommend that they buy this book and use it as a reference.

Psychological Foundations of Success: A Harvard-Trained Scientist Separates the Science of Success from Self-Help Snake Oil
Published in Paperback by ChangePlanet Press (01 January, 2003)
Author: Stephen J. Kraus
Average review score:

User-friendly science is not not an oxymoron!
Dr. Kraus is brilliant--he explains complex research in easy-to understand and digest terms. I found so much fascinating scientific research and it was SO easy to read and understand. This book put a lift in my step--not only did I learn a lot but I put a lot of the suggestions into practice. The book has already positively impacted my life!

Jam-packed with fascinating information
My wife recommended that I read this book because as a family practice physician I see many cases of depression every day. She said that perhaps the scientific research noted in the book would be helpful in evaluating and helping my patients. Not only is this true, the book also added much value to my own life! It is very positive, uplifting, and motivating, not to mention easy to read. It was chock-full of fascinating research studies about happiness, among other topics. I have recommended the book to patients, colleagues, and friends.

Quicken 2003 For Dummies
Published in Paperback by For Dummies (17 September, 2002)
Author: Stephen L. Nelson
Average review score:

An Outstanding Reference
Answered all of my questions. Far superior to struggling with Intuit's opaque "Help" file. Gives great "How to" advice and leads you through a do-able set-up in a very capable piece of software which is - in my opinion - poorly explained in its own accompanying documentation. A real help.

Easy to understand and follow
This book is great. I needed a computer program to track my investments and my income and expenses for tax purposes. I bought Quicken but was dismayed at how hard it was to get going with the software. This book laid down the basics so that I could understand them, and got me into the sophisticated stuff such that I feel I'm getting the most out Quicken.

I'm tracking my investments. I can turn on Quicken and see right away how my investments are doing. My financial picture is finally in order thanks to this book and the advice it gave me.
